Cooly AFL is one of the original Gold Coast AFL clubs. They have a mission to grow grassroots talent. Here's how they use Rounda to build a player injury fund.
Quick factsApril to October 2024 $4859.01
November, December, January $694.14 10 month total $6,096.69 36 average Rounda users per month (and growing) $19. 28 average donation per user per month Cooly AFL - Building a player injury fundThe Coolangatta Football Club was established in 1962. The Club has a proud history as one of the original clubs in the Gold Coast AFL competition.
The Club has had its highs and lows, but has been on an upwards trajectory in recent years. They won a Senior Premiership in 2022. Off the field the club has been through tough times in the early 2000’s, and laid solid foundations for sustainable growth over the last 6 years. With the support of an expanding Junior Club, the Senior Football Club is now poised for ongoing success on and off the field. The Club has worked hard in recent years in attracting and growing a positive culture amongst its playing group as well as volunteer base. They are extremely proud of the minimum behavioural standards that have been set on and off the field and have a vision to create a club that supports its players on and off the field. The club is in the process of building a mental health hub [social club] for its Junior and Senior players and supporters, offering access and support from qualified mental health professionals. A big part of this vision is to ensure the Senior playing group is supported emotionally and financially should they get injured playing football. Cooly AFLs journey to their own player income protection fund started with the frustration after getting insurance quotes. After shopping around and getting prices that were expensive and unsustainable the club decided to start its own fund. That’s when they found Rounda. Rounda offered a way that the club could enlist the playing group and have them contribute their loose change towards their own Players Fund. This fund would not only contribute towards covering the players for income protection if they became injured but would also allow the club to perform other initiatives. The club could now increase the on field medical cover from Standard [60%] to Platinum [90%] cover. New footballs for footy training were also on the list and any excess funds that weren’t spent during the season could then be attributed to player social functions such as the annual footy trip. In the off-season funds that are raised will go towards setting up a nest egg for the 2025 season. This will offer full support in all the areas mentioned over the course of the year. “I'M PROUD OF our SENIOR playing group. they set the standard on and off the field. this injury fund will support them on and off the field” Cooly AFL's top tips for raising funds
Tell your storyThe Club held a meeting with the playing group. Approximately 50 attended. At the meeting, the President and the Senior Coach explained the importance of Rounda as a mechanism to assist in setting up a Players Fund. A Players Fund that would raise funds for the players experience at the Coolangatta Football Club.
The Senior Coach’s message to the playing group about the project was: “Guys, Rounda will work best if we all support it. After listening to you all and what you want as a playing group the only way we can fund that is to implement Rounda and support it 100%. Rounda helps set up a Players Fund that you will all benefit from.” If people are just going to be funding something vague, then they’re going to be less motivated. The President of the club explained that “every cent that is raised via Rounda will be attributed to you, the playing group. This fund is for you and will improve your experience at the club” Engage with supporters – Activation DaysAfter the initial meeting of approximately 50 players, 43 players joined Rounda.
The meeting went for an hour all up. Time was taken at the start of the meeting by the Club President and the Senior Coach to explain the Rounda program and the benefits it will have for the players. They both edified the Rounda staff that were present so that when the Rounda staff spoke the players listened with intent. After running through how Rounda works and how it will work for the Cooly AFL players, the players were then asked to get their mobile phones out. [Banking Customer Registration Number may also be required] A QR Code was then displayed on the screen as well as handed out amongst the players on a printed document. The Rounda staff then went through the easy step by step process to on-board the players onto the Rounda web link. The process only took the players a few minutes with Rounda staff and club leaders there to assist. The players were encouraged to set a weekly maximum [$7.50 p/w] Once completed the players showed their screen to the Team Manger who ticked them off the list. “It’s great to have the senior team get behind the injury fund. It gives the players and the club peace of mind on game day” Team Manager – Cooly AFL A second activation session follow up was held three weeks after the initial day. This was to educate the players that weren’t at the initial activation day. A further 12 players joined Rounda at that session, which now makes a total of 55 on Rounda. However, the overall numbers for the 7 months until und of October were still very good. $4859.01 total funds raised (7 months) $694.14 per month (average) 36 average Rounda users per month (and growing) $19. 28 average donation per user per month The projected income for the Cooly AFL Players fund is in excess of $10,000 p.a. & more players will be joining the Rounda program when preseason training resumes. This will ensure the players fund has a full 12 months of Rounda revenue in the coming year. The Club and the players are already excited about the 2025 season. |
